Moreland council has found itself in a controversy by tipping towards the sports use of the reserve over its use to the locals as a park and open space. As the Age reported a residents group formed to contest the council's plans to replace the grass of soccer ground with a form of plastic known as Astroturf, and in a subsequent report found merit in the resident group's claim that the council had not taken proper account of the residents' interests.
The name of the residents group is Merlynston Community Group. Its website is its campaign site for Hosken Reserve itself.
