The state ALP seems to be behind a move to become more aggressive at council level. Our electorate of Wills is one among several that is in the process of a policy change in favour of endorsing council candidates. The corollary of this is that branch members would not be allowed by the party to publicly support a candidate who did not happen to be an ALP member endorsed as a candidate.

In another development, it appears that the state government is to change the rules to allow wards to elect a single councillor rather that several. The only reason that has been heard of for this is to favour major-party, ie Labor, candidates over independents and Greens.

Certainly the Brunswick branch, among many others, has fallen in behind these changes. The branch and others harbour the ultimate ambition of obtaining a majority of councillors, establishing caucus discipline, and holding the councillors responsible to whatever extent possible to direction from the party. There is little consideration of how that would look to ordinary voters.

There is a general agreement that it is a good idea to get more Labor councillors elected than the present two. There will be municipal elections in 2020.

Moreland Transport Stategy (and parking)

Where all these things come together is in the Wills ALP response to Moreland council's transport strategy, with respect to car-parking regulations in particular. See this page on that subject.

The Nightingale Project

The Nightingale Project is a small housing development which could be a case in point about how the proposed policies might work or not work. The developers asked for a parking waiver from the council and then it got complicated.
